In 1970 I began paintings based on cropmarks and archaeological earthworks, many of these in three dimensions. Complex cropmarks sites resemble in some ways counterpoint music, and this I have tried to suggest in patterns which interlock and overlay one another.

Though these paintings are inventions or fantasies (Venetian painters would have called them capricci) they can be described, in reverse, in archaeological terms, and this I have done with some of them..
