In
1970 I began paintings based on cropmarks and archaeological earthworks,
many of these in three dimensions. Complex cropmarks sites resemble
in some ways counterpoint music, and this I have tried to suggest
in patterns which interlock and overlay one another.
Though
these paintings are inventions or fantasies (Venetian painters would
have called them capricci) they can be described, in reverse, in archaeological
terms, and this I have done with some of them..
